HYPNOTHERAPY
WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis: what is it? "Hypnosis" is a word that comes from the ancient Greek
word 'hypnos' which means "sleep". Although, hypnosis, in reality, is not a state
of sleep, the person who is under a hypnotic state may "appear" to be asleep.
Actually, the hypnotic state is a natural, built-in state of consciousness we all
have, but which most of us have just "forgotten" how to access purposely!
Hypnosis is a way to induce a very relaxing state of mind and body whereby
"suggestions" may be made to the subconscious mind using metaphors, images,
visualizations and verbal suggestions. These suggestions then become imprinted
upon the subconscious mind which makes it much easier to change our behavior
to a more favorable outcome.
IS HYPNOSIS SAFE?
Hypnosis is a very safe and effective way to access the subconscious part of our
mind so that we can effectively bring about desired changes in our behavior.
Hypnosis has been endorsed by the American Medical Association (AMA) since the
1950's and is widely used by doctors, psychologists and health care workers
worldwide. All of our memories and habit energies are stored away in our
subconscious. The subconscious mind also controls our body functions such as
our heart beat and respiratory functions etc. All of our bodily organs function at
the subconscious level. Anything we have ever seen, touched, smelled, tasted or
heard is stored in the subconscious mind. Since the subconscious mind makes up
the vastly greater portion of our mental processes, it would make sense that we
go to that place to evoke the greatest change in our behavior.
WHAT DOES HYPNOSIS FEEL LIKE?
Probably, there are no two people who have experienced hypnosis in exactly the
same way. Yet there are many common sensations and experiences reported by
people who have been under hypnosis. If there was a way to generally describe
what hypnosis feels like for most people, it would be as if you were taking a nap
while you're awake. It may feel like deep daydreaming or just waking up from
sleep or like when you are just about to fall asleep. Some people report that it is
similar to reading a really good book and being totally focused on it. Sometimes it
may feel as if you have fallen asleep. You simply go into a deep state of
relaxation, with the help of the hypnotherapist and he/she simply talks to you
directly with your subconscious mind.
It is a very relaxing yet invigorating experience. You have the opportunity to
communicate as well during hypnosis, if you so choose. Another thing you may
experience in hypnosis is that your mind may wander during the session or you
may even be very awake and lucid. These are all normal occurrences. Chances
are you may cycle in and out of all of those experiences during hypnosis.
AM I GOING TO BE UNCONCSIOUS DURING HYPNOSIS?
You are never "unconscious" during hypnosis! As a matter of fact you may even
be in a more heightened state of awareness. You are never giving up any of your
personal control, ever. You will never be asked to do anything, say anything or act
in any manner that goes against your morals, beliefs or personal values. You may
also come out of hypnosis at any time if you need to! The hypnotherapist is simply
your partner or guide during the session. YOU are the one doing the work! The
hypnotherapist is just there to help guide you through the exercises as your own
subconscious mind does the work.

WHAT ISSUES MAY I
ADDRESS IN
HYPNOTHERAPY?
Hypnosis is very effective in
helping you in many ways!
Here are just a few areas
hypnosis can benefit you:
CAN I BE HYPNOTIZED?
A common question many people
have is: "am I able to be
hypnotized"? Everyone can be
hypnotized. As a matter of fact,
many people are hypnotized every
day without realizing they are
under hypnosis. For example, if
you have ever driven a car some
place and you sped up, slowed
down, changed lanes, put on the
breaks, stopped at all of the lights
and signaled etc., chances are
you did most or all of those things
without "consciously" being aware
of doing so.
You did these things automatically
or subconsciously. Yet you
probably arrived at your desired
destination safely. This is a form
of hypnosis. Many long distance
truck drivers experience this as
"highway hypnosis". Hypnosis
accesses a very similar state of
consciousness and can be used to
help us enhance or change our
lives for the better. Therefore
hypnosis is just a tool to help
access that natural part of our
subconscious mind to make those
changes on purpose and in a safe
and controlled environment.
